The Somafco X Trust in partnership with Metro FM Talk, Xarra Books and City Press are proud to present South Africans with an opportunity to explore and learn more about the rich and diverse history of how South African exiles co-existed with other nationals in Tanzania.
The ANC, supported by most Nordic countries, Ireland, Germany, The Netherlands and organisations such as UNESCO, built what in hindsight was a South African exile dream community, MAZIMBU, on land donated by the Tanzanian government. The inspiration behind Mazimbu and the Solomon Mahlangu Freedom College (SOMAFCO) was to build a prototype version of what a democratic South Africa could or should resemble. Mazimbu also provided a solid parent-base for a lot of displaced South African youths regardless of their biological origin.
